As a child, he lived in Oklahoma, New York, Texas, Virginia, and Puerto Rico. Finally, he settled in to attend school in Washingtion D.C. He graduated from Saint Albans School in Washington D.C. and received his Bachelor of Science in 1952 from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Though 2001: The Space Odyssey and Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi are both set in space, Kubrick and Lucas provide their own distinct measures to portray their versions of outer space. Kubrick leaves his viewers with an anxious and unsettling perception of what is it to be in outer space while Lucas presents space as a familiar and appealing extension of Earth. Star Wars VI: The Return of the Jedi is a journey of familiarity and comfort for most viewers. Lucas parallels different settings in the film with well-known places on Earth.…
Were the Moon Landings real or faked? Were the “Moon Landings” real or were they fictional? Let’s find out, this issue is creating controversy between many Americans nowadays. I’m talking about the “Moon Landings” of 1969, you know that day when all the Americans turned on their televisions to watch this amazing accomplishment. These so called “Moon Landings” were during the time of the Vietnam War.…
Throughout the film 2001: A Space Odyssey the director Stanley Kubrick uses 3 orchestral pieces of music composed by Gyorgy Ligeti. Born 28th of May 1923 in Hungary Gyorgy Ligeti he grew up wanting to be a musician. Starting out as a freelancer working in the Electronic Music Studio where he was then appointed a professor after many years of lecturing. It wasn’t until Ligeti released his “Atmospheres” when he was recognized worldwide of his musical talents.…
I chose this source because this website talked all about what he did as an astronaut in Apollo 11 and it speaks about his life before and after his time as an astronaut. This page even has things that Collins himself had said or thought during this event. The bias of this source was very easily noticeable. It's obvious that the author, Robin Mckie, was on Michael Collins' side because he said things like, "He would not suffer a fate of global notoriety. In fact, the opposite happened.…
Sally Ride was the first American female to ever go into space. Sally Ride wrote children’s science books about exploring space as well. She attended Stanford University in California where she earned her degree in Physics. Her job on her first shuttle mission was to work the robotics arm. She was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame…
Arthur C. Clarke the author of “2001: A Space Odyssey” posits in his book that human evolution comes with consequences. Human evolution is shown to have consequences in “2001: A Space Odyssey” mainly due to the capability to utilize their advancing intelligence. For instance, Hal who was created due to evolved human intelligence malfunctions and kills three humans, and if one computer can do it others could too. Humans, as they evolved started to show discontent for their state of living, and thus began the never ending unhappiness with what they have that led to many problems for all those on Earth.…
To go far and beyond as past Apollo missions were the plans for the Apollo 13 mission, but with a sudden change of plans they only had one mission left, get back home safe and alive. They launched on April 11, 1970, orbiting around the moon and back to earth for five days, twenty-two hours, fifty-four minutes, and forty-one seconds, and landed back to Earth in the Pacific Ocean on April 17 1970. On the mission, the crew composed of James A. Lovell Jr. as commander, Charles M. Duke Jr. as Lunar Module Pilot, and John L. Swigert Jr. As Command Module Pilot. Originally Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly was to be part of the Apollo 13 crew, but when exposed to German measles, to which was unknown to his immunity, from backup crew Lunar Module Pilot Charles Duke, he was replaced by John Swigert.…
On July 20, 1969 the United States of America took its first step on the moon with Apollo 11. The reasons behind one of the greatest achievements in the history of the United States lies in the Cold War and the Space Race. The Cold War was a time where the world’s leading empires were at great tension. America's alliance with the Soviet Union was beginning to crumble without a common enemy such as the Soviet Union and Japanese.…
Health is one of the main concerns when it came to the Apollo/Lunar missions. It was essential to know the conditions that would be on the moon. Since none had been there before the problem had to be solved by the first 10 Apollo missions with the first real test of the equipment, exercises and gear being a field test. Now with more funding and eyes being turned back to the moon, these health projects, designs, and papers are being reopened. The health of future astronauts is the concern and it is being studies.…
I chose my topic, Apollo 11, because of my love of science. Space has always been one of my favorite topics and I wanted to research Apollo 11 because it was the first moon landing. I started my research on my school data bases. I was able to find most of my primary resources on the databases but also found good secondary resources as well. At first I did not like what the database offered but once I found certain sites I could use my project took off.…
Technological development is a dynamic process that has brings about constant change in which some individuals benefit and others are harmed. Like with most world changing phenomenon, it brings with it a host of ethical concerns about its influence in society and whether or not it deserves consciousness. Throughout his life, Arthur C. Clarke was fascinated with science and the stars, building his own telescope to view the stars as a child. He famously toasted with his friends during the V2 raids on London as it marked the beginning of the space age. While being optimistic about the future of technological advancements, Clarke understood the possible violent complications of technology, and he saw this first hand during his service in the RAF…
NASA’s greatest success is most usually attributed to the moon landings, however the accomplishments of the government space program go far beyond just that. Created by President Eisenhower in 1958, NASA’s mission was to provide America with research into outer space flight, and was created during the Space race and Cold War with the Soviet Union, which was a power struggle and race for arms and was caused by the distrust between America and the USSR, and the tension that was caused by the creation and use of nuclear weapons by America. The Space Race started with the Soviet Union as a way to show which country had better rocket technology and science, and was ended by the United States putting a man on the moon first. The USSR had a major…
The Apollo program was a series of planned manned space flight missions with the ultimate goal of sending a man to the moon, and out matching the Russians. The mission that landed the first people on the moon was Apollo 11. This mission became famous worldwide as people watched the first steps of Neil Armstrong on the television. This momentous event changed the tide of the space race. Showing that America was superior in space technology and programs and showing that the United States was the true world power because we beat the Russians to the moon, despite the Russians launching satellites into space first.…
The Apollo Space Program was very important to many Americans and NASA because it dealt with sending astronauts into space and exploring the unknown solar system. That is why on April 11th, 1970, NASA launched three astronauts into space. This launch is known as Apollo 13, or the 13th launch out of Earth’s solar system. NASA sent three men, Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert, into space on the Apollo 13 mission.…
