One of the characters that was a stand out when reading was Fetiukov who is shown in the book as being someone who is barely surviving and having to take the scraps that others do not want. When reading this I thought mainly about the way that the Soviets could possibly interpret a character like this and I came up with the idea that Fetiukov could represent a capitalist state. The Soviets view a capitalist state as being weak and not reaching full potential but think everyone around the world mostly follows it because it is the only way really noticed that works. This could be a way to show that capitalism is weak and if a communist nation came to be then everyone that chose to stay in a capitalist state would have to settle for all the scraps that the communists did not want. Even later on in the novel when Fetiukov is beaten up by the others for showing a coward display of licking the bowls after everyone is finished is another reason why Fetiukov’s character could be seen as a capitalist state. This shows that during the reign of Stalin if you did not agree with the political, social, or economic view that was declared the best for the evolvement of the communist nation then you were considered to be a traitor or someone trying to sabotage the system. Not touching much on the conditions of the Gulag most of the prisoners figure out that you have to view the condition you are in the best way possible like that of Alyosha and have faith that one day everything will end. In many of the characters though once they all had a common task they never let each other down and worked with each other to try and make their time at the Gulag the best it could be which shows that even when in a terrible situation the human qualities of care come out. This quality may have been the reason that some of the people in the Gulag withstood and survived until everything
