The late 19th and early 20th centuries was a critical time blacks in America. Segregation was going on and there was no equality for blacks. Two important men who stepped up to the plate to get equality was Booker T. Washington and W.E.B DuBois. Both of these gentleman had the same goal which was to uplift the negro race. However both of these men had different strategies. Booker T. Washington created the accommodationist strategy. The accommodationist strategy told blacks to gradually gain their right by working hard and staying loyal to the whites. W.E.B DuBois strategy was the Talented Tenth. The Talented Tenth was an essay that explained that blacks should fight for their rights and prove the whites wrong. W.E.B DuBois ' Talented Tenth strategy plan was the most effective method to improve the lives of African Americans.
DuBois believed that colored men should receive classical education so they can reach their full potential. With classical education blacks got more education and better careers. Blacks got the opportunity to have better careers such as writers, lawyers, doctors, etc. In the Talented Tenth essay DuBois said "The Negro race, like all races, is going to be saved by it 's exceptional men. The problem of education then, among Negros must first of all deal with the Talented Tenth; it is the problem of developing the best of this race that may guide the mass away from the contamination and death of the west".
