The goal of criminological research in a theory building is to ameliorate our understanding of criminal behavior and make it easier for us to develop successful strategies to tackle the crime problem.
Theories provide answers to why criminals behave and act as they do. Theories help reveal patterns in data, link studies to one another, supply frameworks within which concepts and variables acquire importance, and it allows us to interpret the larger meaning of our findings. An example would be analyzing a child’s brainwaves while playing violent videogames. If there was a link to aggression it can help us understand how really influential violence in the digital media is and how to address the situation.
