The characters in A Raisin in the Sun are searching for the American dream and between the Youngers each view is different. Beneatha Younger wants to go to school and become a doctor. Walter Younger wants to invest in a liquor store and become rich. Ruth Younger wants a happy family out of poverty. The American dream is a dream of having a family, a house, a car, or more. Everybody’s American dream is different. For Beneatha, it’s becoming a doctor and as a woman that was very difficult, especially for her who is an African American woman in poverty. Another dream she has is to have her own religion, and in Mama’s house there is only one. “B: Mama, you don’t understand. It’s all a matter of ideas, and that is just one idea I don’t accept.I am not going out and being immoral or committing crimes because I don’t believe in God.” (Hansberry pg24) Walter Younger’s American dream is to become the man of the house.
