The characters in A Raisin in the Sun are searching for the American dream and between the Youngers each view is different. Beneatha Younger wants to go to school and become a doctor. Walter Younger wants to invest in a liquor store and become rich. Ruth Younger wants a happy family out of poverty. The American dream is a dream of having a family, a house, a car, or more. Everybody’s American dream is different. For Beneatha, it’s becoming a doctor and as a woman that was very difficult, especially for her who is an African American woman in poverty. Another dream she has is to have her own religion, and in Mama’s house there is only one. “B: Mama, you don’t understand. It’s all a matter of ideas, and that is just one idea I don’t accept.I am not going out and being immoral or committing crimes because I don’t believe in God.” (Hansberry pg24) Walter Younger’s American dream is to become the man of the house. …show more content…
But he can’t get any of it if Ruth is telling him no and not listening to what he has to say. “W: Man says to his woman: I got me a dream. His woman says, “Eat your eggs.” (pg.11) Walter's second dream is to own a liquor store with his friends. His idea is to invest all the insurance money into it, thinking it will make them rich. Money is the only thing he wants and thinks. Ruth Younger’s dream is to have a happy family and a happy marriage. Walter and Ruth’s marriage is falling apart and she is tired and exhausted. She tries to keep everything together, but every encounter they have is Walter telling her about the liquor store or they’re arguing. Another dream Ruth has is to have a house for her family, all her life she has been living in poverty.
