The major difference in Hansberry’s version of the Faustian bargain is that Walter Lee resists the “satanic temptation”, while in other forms, Walter Lee gives into the temptation. Foster states that “Previous Versions have been either tragic or comic depending on whether the devil successfully collects the soul at the end of the work”, but this is not the case for Hansberry’s version.…

Money plays a major role in society, from income to loans to even insurance money. It comes in various currencies, amounts, and forms. Money can serve as a life saver or a stressor depending on how it’s perceived. In the play A Raisin in the Sun, the arrival of a $10,000 insurance check is key to each family member in the Younger household and while the few typical readers focus on the money, the author Lorraine Hansberry influences the audience's response with character vs conflict, inner conflict, and obstacles to be faced. While wallowing in his frustration over failing to escape poverty, Walter reveals his resentment that he works hard at his job and still cannot provide his son with a bed or his own room. He later confesses how upsetting it is to him that he cannot get ahead and that he is always “tooken” (Hansberry 141). In a fit of rage after he squandered away the family’s money, Walter declares that he has learned a valuable lesson from the conman who stole his money: the world is divided into two types of people the “takers” and the “tooken,” and it does not matter how you get the money as long as you are the one who ends up with it (Hansberry 141). Like Hughes says, all Walter can see is “the same old stupid plan.”…

In her play, “A Raisin in the Sun,” Lorraine Hansberry projects several conflicts that African Americans faced in the 1950s through her characters. These conflicts include the pressure to either assimilate to the current American standards or to maintain African tradition, the urge to make money to get one’s family out of the ghetto, the need to lead one’s family, and the tough decisions to be made to support and protect the family. Hansberry openly addresses the fact that there was a serious racial issue at the time acting as an obstacle in the family’s dream of leaving the ghetto to start a new, better life in Clybourne Park. By sharing this play, Lorraine Hansberry makes a driven statement that blacks can achieve their dreams, but that…

The play “A Raisin in the Sun” has always intrigued my interest because of its theme: in order to achieve their dreams, people must accept themselves, the circumstances they’re in, and their family who support them, rather than focusing on the money they don’t have as a way to get what they want. Instead of already being middle-class, the Youngers want that American family lifestyle that is promised to all who live as American citizens. It is an ongoing subject of unfulfilled dreams that the characters face. The play addresses these topics in multiple situations they encounter, such as racism and poverty. Self acceptance and family seem to be the only way they can overcome that obstacle of feeling “stuck”.…
