A Breath of Frost, written by Alyxandra Harvey, is a fictional novel taking place in 1814 London. This story contains a mixture of adventure, mystery, romance and friendship. The plot revolves around a young debutante named Emma, who just wanted something interesting to happen in her boring life. When Emma unintentionally breaks a perfume-like bottle, a binding spell was broken. Three cousins’-Emma, Gretchen and Penelope-magical abilities were unleashed, revealing their secret family lineage of witchcraft. Unfortunately along with their individual powers, the binding spell also contained the gates to the Underworld. Mysteriously, Emma continues to be dragged to the crime scenes made by the Greymalkin murders. As the cousins began to seek the reason for their magical skills being sealed, Emma has been suspected by the Order for being associated with the Greymalkin sisters’ murders. The main romance in this novel is between Emma and Cormac, they had shared a kiss but immediately after he ditched her and kissed almost every other girl, emphasizing the definition of a player. Although “He’d helped put her in a cage and left her to the Order. After kissing her senseless”(213), Emma continues to think about him. Cormac is a Keeper, a member of the Order, “He’d taken a blood oath to protect witches from warlocks, and from one another if necessary.”(128). This conflicted on where his duties lie; the Order or the person he loves, Emma. The friendship of the three cousins is shown throughout the book as they help each other get through these obstacles. They would do anything for each other to protect and defend each other.
