George Orwell's 1984 (1949) novel gives the reader an insight on what the future holds for us with the advancement of today's technology. The protagonist Winston Smith lives in Oceania; a society where everyone is being monitored and being told how to live But despite the circumstances they're living under, a society based on hate and suffering could exist according to O'Brien. O'Brien has an ideal society on how one could survive in a world full of hate; he later goes on and explains to Winston how it's possible for it to survive. For example on book 3 when O'Brien is torturing Winston into loving big brother, he tells Winston "The party controls all records, and humans control all memories" (p.g 249) What O'Brien is trying to make Winston understand is, when it comes to the records and memories of a human being, the party seeks control over the past, present, and future on what they …show more content…
Whether it's monitoring the phone calls or what they watch, this country is a great example on how society can exist on hate and suffering. North Korea is known for running their country a certain way for example everything media related has to glorify their "Great leader" Kim II-Sung; as mention in the book "The new tune which was the theme song.... had already been composed and was being played endlessly" (p.g 148) the city is only allowed to play tunes that mention the good that Kim Sung has done for the country. Human rights are very limited in North Korea in fact, it's known for having the worst human rights in the world. Opposed to other countries when someone does something offensive one gets put into jail but in North Korea's case one receives the capital punishment depending on how bad the crime is, one is tortured until a certain point or is tortured then
