Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia!”
“He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.”
Symbols and Meaning:
Glass paperweight: symbolizes the relationship Julia and Winston have. Winston and Julia are supposed to represent the coral hidden inside the glass, and the glass represents Big Brother. When the glass is shattered by the thought police, the relationship Winston and Julia have is destroyed.
2 + 2 = 5: symbolizes the absolute control The Party and Big Brother have over Winston and the other citizens of Oceania. Even though it is mathematically impossible, The Party instills this concept into the minds of the citizens to exercise complete control over them, so there is no uprising against the government.
Archetypes:
Place where there is no darkness: Winston’s recurring dream where O’Brien tells him that they will “meet in the place where there is no darkness”. Foreshadows after Winston and Julia get captured, and O’Brien places Winston in Room 101, where the room is constantly illuminated by a bright light. The dream symbolizes O’Brien’s deception and Winston’s ultimate downfall.
