Aim |
To see whether children's behaviour changed after the introduction of television and to compare it with other towns that did have TV |
|
Procedure |
Measured range of behaviours before and after the introduction of television: » aggression in classroom and playground » leisure activities » IQ » creativity and reading ability The observations didn't occur u tell after the children were used to the observers presence. Measured number of physical and verbal aggressive acts. Called the town 'Notel' and studied two neighbouring towns with similar population and economy, Unitel (one channel) and Multitel (many channels). All three towns studied before introduction of TV in Unitel and for two years after. |
|
Results |
Children were twice as aggressive after TV was introduced to Notel. » spent less than half the time on leisure activities »increased gender differences »IQ dropped slightly » aggression increased in both towns over the two years, but Notel children increased far more in comparison |
|
Conclusion |
Notel showed increased levels of aggression because of the introduction of television, which also reduced time spent on leisure activities, lowered creativity and intelligence. |
|
Strengths |
Real place where TV introduced naturally, far more realism. Two year period, long time for behaviour to be directly observed and compared before and after. Observed in natural surroundings, also allowed children to be comfortable with their presence so that they would be acting normally. |
|
Weaknesses |
Researchers didn't control what or how much TV was watched or the adult supervision and control of viewing. Observations may be biased, researchers seeing what they want to. Reported higher levels of aggression bc they expected it after the introduction of television. |
