Aim |
To see if amphetamines affects PFC and WCST |
Hypothesis |
Amphetamines will affect performance of PFC and WCST |
Method |
Lab experiment |
Sample |
10 chronic schizophrenics |
Materials |
- amphetamine - placebo drug |
Procedure |
- participants was given either dpse of an amphetamine or placebo drug - They completed WCST and bar task on a computer whilst in a SPECT scanner - 4 days later recompleted the test with opposite drug they had taken before |
Results |
- no difference between both drugs when completing the bar task - amphetamine had a small but positive effect on the amount of questions answered correctly - small difference between both drugs in the WSCT as some areas of the prefrontal cortex were more active |
Conclusion |
Amphetamines increased the ability of the prefrontal cortex to focus in WCST |
Criticisms |
- cultural bias - cannot be generalised as there were not many participants |
