For a long time, television and video games have been said to be the cause of violence and anti-social behavior in children and adolescents. This topic has been has been the focus of more than 1,000 studies (“Effects of Reducing TV and Game Use on Aggressive Behavior.” Robinson et al.). Opinions on this seem to be split down the middle, with some people claiming that yes, media influence does contribute to anti-social behaviors, while the others claim that media has nothing to do with it. One could say that you can never know for sure what causes anti-social behavior in children and adolescents due to the ever-changing circumstances of a child’s life.
For those who claim that media does have an effect on children and adolescents, they have quite a bit of research to back them up. One study conducted by doctors from Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention used third- and fourth-grade students from two sociodemographically and scholastically matched schools in a single school district in San Jose, California and their parents and guardians (“Effects of Reducing TV and Game Use on Aggressive Behavior.” Robinson et al.). Different studies come up with different conclusions, because every single person is different and they all have different life circumstances. The most frequent advice that seems to be given is to know what your child is like and how they would react to certain stimuli, so just monitor what your children watch and play based on that
