Describe the composition of earth's atmosphere |
Earth's atmosphere is made up of 78% nitrogen 21% oxygen and 1% other gases |
|
Describe how air pressure and density change as altitude increases |
Density and air pressure decrease as altitude increases in the atmosphere |
|
Define wind |
Wind is the mostly horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure |
|
Explain what causes land and sea breezes |
During the day the heats the land faster than the ocean creating an area if low pressure over the land and an area if high pressure above the ocean. The high pressure moves in on the low pressure creating a sea breeze. At night the land cools faster than the ocean creating an area of high pressure above the land while the oceans air is still warm and low pressure. The lands high pressure moves in on the oceans low pressure creating a land breeze |
|
Describe the characteristics of low and high pressure systems and the weather associated with them |
Warn air rises at the center of a low pressure system (L) causing surrounding air to spiral toward the center. Because air is converging in the center, air masses collide causing fronts of clouds precipitation and stormy weather. Cool, dense air sinks at the center of a high pressure system causing surrounding air to spiral outward from center. This causes clear skies, very little precipitation and generally calmer weather |
|
Describe the difference between weather and climate |
Weather is the short term (minutes to months) condition of the atmosphere at a particular time that changes day to day Climate is the average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time. |
