Indication for use |
Indicated as adjunctive therapy for patients 4+ with focal seizures who are resistant to AEDs. Ideal candidate has had sleep study to rule out pseudoseizures, does not have cardiac issues and is not a good candidate for excisional surgery. |

How does it work? |
Generator, lead, electrodes, magnet. Mild and rhythmic stimulation to vagal nerve, innervation sends action potentials to the brain. Main method of action: decreases neurotransmitters, increases blood flow, disrupts abnormal EEG rhythms. Together, this reduces the frequency, intensity and duration of seizures. 80% of seizures are precluded by tachycardia. Responsive VNS can activate within 5 seconds = peace of mind Magnet mode gives control to patient and caregiver. |

Efficacy |
Increases over time. With responsive VNS, at 13 months: 6 in 10 patients achieve a 50% or greater reduction in seizures. 4 in 10 experience an 80% or greater reduction. 25% reduction in SUDEP rate, 30% when adjust for age. |
