Viroid
- Naked infectious RNAs that do not contain or encode any proteins
Parts of a virus
- Genome: RNA or DNA carrying genetic information
- Capsid: protein shell surrounding and protecting the genome
- Envelope: a lipid bilayer surrounding and protecting the capsid in which surface glycoproteins are embedded.
IRES
- internal ribosome entry site
- allows for translation initiation in the middle of mRNA
- used by Poliovirus, HCV, ECMV
Double-stranded RNA
- Produced by RNA viruses as a replication intermediate
- indicates viral infection when present
- recognized by Type I interferon, Protein Kinase R, RNAseL.
Viral Growth Curve
Viral replication patterns
- Lytic infection (e.g. Adenovirus)
- Persistent infection: an infection that lasts indefinitely
- Chronic infection: A persistent infection in which viral replication is continuous (HCV, HBV)
- Latent infection: A persistent infection in which viral production is not continually present (Herpesviurs).
Nonenveloped DNA Virus replication mechanism
- enter by endocytosis
- uncoat in endosome/cytoplasm
- genome transported to nucleus
- viral transcription, DNA replication and assembly occur in nucleus
- cells lyse to release particles
