Isabella
She was Queen of Spain, married Ferdinand King of Aragon, and supported the Inquisition in 1478 to punish heretics, Jewish converts, and Muslims. She was a strong woman that had a library of 400 books. She supported Christopher Columbus' sail across the Atlantic.
Hernando de Soto
he landed in Florida in 1539 to search for a majestic civilization with lots of gold that he could conquer. He and his men slaughtered Native Americans and suffered for three years before he died in 1542. Though this tale is rather unromantic and a little pathetic, he was the first European to cross the Mississippi river.
New Spain
what those on the Iberian peninsula called the New World: they owned and plundered so much of it that it was pretty much theirs. The name was meant to show the other Europeans how to make use of the New World because obviously they were doing it right.
Roanoke
the island that Sir Walter Raleigh sent a group of colonists to under John White's leadership in 1587. White went back to England for supplies, and when he returned, the island was deserted. The only clue he found was the word "Croatoan" scratched into a tree, which turned out to be moot because the alien ship that picked them up had that name and was long gone before White got back.
Christopher Columbus
The first European to find the New World, probably landing his ship in the Carribean, and beginning the connection between cultures that lead to the Europeans' settling in the Western Hemisphere. He was convinced all his life that he had reached India, his original destination, but never actually made it to India, instead discovering a new world.
Reconquest
The campaign by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to make everyone in the Iberian Peninsula Christian, leaving no Islam there.
Repartimiento
A reform made so that an encomendero could only command the male Indians in his territory to work 45 days a year.
Martin Luther
He was a Catholic priest in Germany that publicized his criticisms of the Catholic church; he was seen as dangerous by monarchs and church officials. Believed that Christians do not need priests or rituals for salvation. He wanted to reform the church.
Encomienda
It is the distribution of conquered towns to soldiers. Encomiendos could rule Indians and lands in and around their towns, in return for tribute and labor of the Indians. The encomendero were supposed to help the indians and convert them to Christianity; however, they abused their power.
Treaty of Tordesillas
A treaty that drew an imaginary line 1100 miles west of the Canary Islands. Land that was discovered west of the line belonged to Spain; while land discovered to the east was claimed by Portugal.
Hernan Cortes
Led an expedition of roughly six hundred men and eleven ships in attempt to discover the vast riches of the mainland. He defeated the Mexican on August 13th, 1521.
Acoma pueblo revolt
a group of pueblo Indians who revolted against the Spaniards, shortly after swearing an oath of loyalty to them.
Montezuma
The emperor of the Mexican empire Tenochtitlan.
Columbian Exchange
A transatlantic trade of goods, people, and ideas.
Protestant Reformations
Martin Luther's published criticisms of the Catholic Church.
