Economic Imperialism |
The process in which banks and corporations from developed nations invest in undeveloped regions and establish a major presence there is the hope or making high profits; not the same as colonial expansion in that businesses invest where there can make a profit, which may not in their own nation's colonies. |

Direct vs. Indirect Rule |
Direct Rule: to take members from the home government and empose them directly in the colonized region.
Indirect Rule: to teach/educate individuals in the colonized area in the way of the home government and the members of the home government would leave. |

Leopold brutally treated the Africans for the sake of the sake of profit. Leopold created the Association for the Exploration and Civilization of Central Africa and used it to make Henry Stanley establish Belgian settlements in Congo. |

Social Darwinism |
The application of Darwin's principle of organic evolution to the social order; led to the belief that progress comes from the struggle for survival as the fittest advance and the weak decline. |

White Man's Burden |
The idea that "dominant" white/European races have the burden of having to civilize the "inferior" races in uncivilized areas. |

Imperialism in China |
The motivation of European imperialism in in China was for silk, tea, porcelain. Europeans brought over opium which hurt the Chinese people and ulimately the economy . European countries gained areas of influence in China where their government prevailed. All of this caused the decline of the Chinese monarchy. |

Sun- Yat-Sen |
Founding father to the Chinese Republic. Adopted nationalism, democracy, and socialism and overthrew the Manchu Dynasty in 1912. |

A major outburst of violence against foreigners. Was driven by the secret organization called the Society of Harmonious Fists whose aim was to push foreigners out of China. |

The British rule in India subconitnent in 1858 and 1947. Can also refer to the period of dominion.

Sepoy Rebellion |
The British East India company was responsible for subjugating much of India. The Sepoys (Indian Troops of the East India Company's army) revolted and were crushed and the area was put into the control of the British government. |

Gandhi and non violent protest |
Constructed a nonviolent resistance movement whose main aim was to improve the poor and grant it its independence. Gandhi pushed to not follow British regulations and not to buy British goods but manufacture ones in India instead. |

Slowly industrialized and repressed political opposition from center and the left. It entered wars with japan germany and austria.

American Imperialism |
America first imperialized the Samoan islands and next the Hawaiian islands, America made Pearl Harbor into the a naval station. Hawaii was annexed in 1898. The American defeat of Spain motivated them to imperialize Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippine Islands. |

The Bismarkian System |
The alliance Bismark made with traditionally conservative states, Austria-Hungary and Russia in the fear that France would want revenge for taking Alsace-Lorraine. This created the "The Three Emperors' League" but it failed because of the Russian-Austrian rivalry in the Balkans. |

Commodore Matthew Perry threatens Japanese shogun to trade with America and Japan agrees. Japan sends scholars to learn in America and Japan quickly adopts western industry, technologies and industrializes. Also copies American educational system and congressive Germanic government. |
