Aims

A statement of what the researcher(s) intend to find out in a research study.

Hypothesis

A precise and testable statement about the assumed relationship between variables.

Directional Hypothesis

It states which condition of the IV will perform better or worse than the other.

Non-Directional Hypothesis

A non-directional prediction of what is expected to happen. It states that there will be a difference between the conditions of the IV, but does not include which will be better or worse.

Independent Variable

The variable that has been manipulated or changed in order to test its effects on the dependent variable.

Dependent Variable

The variable that the experimenter measures.

What ethical issues must you consider when conducting research?

- Never use anyone who may be described as ‘vulnerable’


- Always obtain informed consent


- Debrief your participants after the study

Extraneous Variables

Variables that you are not intentionally studying in your experiment.

Standardised Procedures

A set of procedures that are the same for all participants in order to be able to repeat the study.

Operationalising

Ensuring that variables are in a form that can be easily tested.
