Prokaryotic

cell that does NOT have a nucleus or any other membrane-covered organelles (i.e., bacteria cell).

Eukaryotic

A cell that contains a central nucleus and a complicated structure inside the cell.

Bacteria

Extremely small, single-celled organisms without a nucleus (AKA prokaryotic cells)

Robert Hooke

First person to observe cells (cork cells) and came up with the term "cell"

Anton Van Leeuwenhoek

A Dutch merchant that used his own hand-made microscope to look at pond scum. First person to see bacteria.

Matthias Schleiden

German scientist that looked at plant tissues and concluded all plant parts are made of cells. (Beginning of cell theory).

Organelles

A structure within a cell sometimes surrounded by a membrane.

Cell Wall

A structure that surrounds that cell membrane of some cells and provides strength and support to the cell membrane.

Chloroplast

An organelle found in a plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs.

Semipermeable/ Selectively Permeable

Allowing certain substances to pass through but not others

Mitochondria

A cell organelle surrounded by two membranes that break down food molecules to make ATP.

Nucleus

The membrane-covered organelle found in a eukaryotic cell; contains the cells DNA and serves as the control center of the cell.

Cytoplasm

Cellular fluid surrounding a cell's organelles.

Theodor Schwann

German scientist that came up with the first two parts of cell theory which states:

* All organisms are made of one or more cells.

* Cell is the basic unit of life in all living

things.

Rudolf Virchow

German doctor that came up with the third part of cell theory, which states:

* All cells come from existing cells.
