20 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
A person, place or thing from which data can be gathered
Subject
All subjects of interest
Population
A subset of a population
Sample
A value that summarizes information about a sample
Statistic
A value that summarizes information about a population
Parameter
The science of characterizing and describing the sample and inferring, on this bias, what is happening in the population
STATISTICS
Property or characteristic held by items in a population that may vary across the population
Variable
When outcomes simply specify the group the subject belongs to (numerical only as a coding device)
Categorical Variable
When the outcomes must be expressed as numbers through counting or measuring
Numerical Variable
NO outcomes between consecutive outcomes
Discrete numerical
INFINITE numbers between 2 outcomes
Continuous Numerical
Numerical values are substituted for group names for a categorical variable.
Coded Variable
A subject's numerical value for some variable
Score
The set of outcomes and scores for all variables of all subjects
Data
a variable is generally set or manipulated by the researcher
Independent Variable
A variable whose variable is generally set or manipulated by the researcher
Independent Variable
Variable measured by the researcher as the focus of the study (often one wants to know the effect the independent variable has on the dependent variable)
Dependent Vairable
When each sample of a given size has the same chance of being chose.
Simple Random Sampling
The researcher does not APPLY values for the independent variables, but may select on the basis. The values of the DV already exist but need to be collected.
Obersvational Study
The method of producing data as a consequence of applying values for the independent variable. The DV is produced for the purpose of the study
