Electron Transfer

Responsible for the final stages of oxidation of fatty acids, carbs, and amino acids in the presence of oxygen

Reduced coenzymes are oxidized by delivering hydrogen to a series of redox adaptors (cytochromes), electrons pass from one cytochrome to the next along a electrochemical proton gradient (requires coenzyme Q and Iron). Final Stage: cytochrome oxidase transfers electrons to oxygen to form water

Hydrogen Bonding

within proteins, DNA, RNA (spontaneous attractions between hydrogen and oxygen atoms)
