What are some of the functions of the geosphere?
-its a container for life and water
-entraps and lowers green house gases
-creates magneto sphere
-effects cloud formation
-responsible for the plate movements which shapes our earth in many ways
what is basic outline of the evolution of the geosphere?
1) durring the "big bang" gravity pulled pieces of matter together to form a molten earth
2) then there was out gassing which formed the layer of earth
3)but then there was a great collision that caused part of the earth to fling off, thus creating our moon. This collision however made the earth molten again.
4) gravity pulls the earth back into its spherical shape and beguines the cooling process once again
What are the 2 sources of energy that comes from the earth?
radioactive decay that forms in the center of the earth and the energy left over from the collision
Explain the rock cycle.
Plates of the geosphere are constantly moving. When 2 of these plates collide, they either both press upward to form a mountain or they press downward and melt into magma. Then this magma comes out through a volcano, goes through processes of a rock (igneous to sedimentary, to metamorphic etc.) then becomes part of a plate again.
what is lithification?
when sediment compound into rock
what happens when a igneous rock does not reach the surface?
it turns directly into a metamorphic rock
what is an intrusive rock?
rock created from lava similar to igneous rock
what are some major characteristics of an igneous rock?
large crystals, ones that cooled very quickly have no crystals and appear glassy.may contain holes, do not contain any carbon
what are some major characteristics of a metamorphic rock?
look like igneous except have bands of color, has carbon, look like aluminum foil
what are some major characteristics of a sedimentary rock?
may contain carbon, can see large chunks of rock, looks like cement, can contain parallel layers (NOT BANDS)
what is in the crust of the earth?
olivines and proxens (not sure)
what is in the mantel?
magnisium, silicone
what is in the outer core?
nickel and iron (molten)
what is in the inner core?
nickel and iron (solid)
