Reliability

Sometimes referred to as consistency -- whether research can be repeated to look for similar findings.

Research high in reliability is usual research which has high levels of control so that it can be repeated in exactly the same way.

Validity

1. Whether or not the findings can be generalized outside of the experimental situation (sometimes referred to as external validity).

2. Whether the experiment is actually measuring what it is claiming to measure (sometimes referred to as internal validity) -- this type of validity can be affected by demand characteristics or investigator effects.

How can we test validity?

1. Carry out the study in another setting. e.g. in a natural env. as opposed to a laboratory (a type of external validity referred to as ecological validity).

2. Carry out the study with a different group of people (a type of external validity called population validity).

3. Look at a different test which is high in validity and see if the results are the same in our test (sometimes called concurrent validity).
