What is validity? |
The results of our experiment show what we bset out to measure |
What is reliability? |
Consistency. The results obtained from one study are also found when the same study is repeated |
What do we look for to see if our results are reliable? |
A statistically significant positive correlation |
How is validity measured? |
Face; temporal; ecological; population; concurrent; content; predictive |
How is reliability measured? |
By looking at the researchersmethods internally, and at external factors |
How is reliability assessed? |
Inter-researcher and intra-researcher |
What is the name for the reliabilty that comes with having more than one researcher participate in an observation? |
Inter-rater reliability |
How can the reliability of research be improved? |
By looking at the design of a study and training researchers in what they're looking for from their observations. |
What is and how is, external reliability assessed |
Testing outside of research over time (redoing a study in the future). |
What is and how is, internal reliability assessed |
Testing within the research at the time. |
What is internal validity? |
How controlled an experiment is e.g extraneous varibale, articipants etc |
What is external validity? |
Whether the research is consistent in different contexts, times, populations etc |
Why is face validity the simplest level of assessment? |
It's superficial, it's about whether or not the measures you're using do measure what you set out to measure |
What type of validity is used in a peer review? |
Content validity |
What is ecological validity? |
The extent to which findings can be applied to real life settings and situations |
What is population validity? |
Whether research findings are generalisable to the majority- regardless of class, race. sex or culture |
What is temporal validity? |
The ability of a theory or concept to be consistent even though people and cultures have changed since the theory was first developed |
What is content validity? |
That the assessment procedures used gather all the relevant information for the research |
