Marcion

2nd century chrsitian who believed that there were two gods. 1) the legalistic god of the Jews and 2) merciful and loving God of Jesus (all divine no human).


- Believed that Paul held Jesus over Christian law and he wanted all Christians to abandon Christian law.

Ignatius

Bishop of Antioch Syria in early 2nd century, arerested by Roman autorities for Christian activities. He wsa sent to Rome to be thrown to the wild beasts. On his way to martyrdom he wrote 7 letters: Christians of Ephesus, Magnesia, Tralles, Rome, Smyrna, Philadelphia, and to Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna.

Philo

1st century Jewish philospher who lived in Alexandria Egypt. He saw the the Jewish scipture as completely compatiable with greek philosophy and he worked to interpret the scriptures accordingly.

Mithras

A persian diety worshipped in a mystery cult spread throughout the roman world. Worshippers were made up of roman soldiers only.

Essenes

Apocalyptic and ascetic Jewish sect that starrted during the Maccabean period. It is believed these members produced the dead sea scrolls.

Josephus

1st century Jewish historian appointed court historian by the Roman emperor Vespasian. His works such as the Jewish War provide us with information about life in first century Palestine.

Maccaban

Family of priests that started the revolt against Syria in 167 BCE. The ruled Israel up until the Roman conquest in 63 BCE.

Pliny

Roman aristocrat in early second century CE. Correspondence with the emperor Trajan contains theealriest reference to Jesus in a pagan soruces.

Nero

Roman emperor 54-86 CE. Under his rule Peter adn Paul were allegedly martyred during his persecution of Christians for the fire that destoryed most of the city.

Source use by Mathhew and Luke NOT Mark. Comes from the German "Quelle" for source. It was a source used by the two Gospels that no longer existsts but could be constructed by comparing the two gospels.

Tertullian

Author from the late second and early third century. A Christian apologists from North Africa that wote in Latin. He wrote his apology to defend the Christian church and the prosecutions being made by the state by seeing religious liberty as a right to man.

Septuagiant

Translation of the hebrew bible. The "Translation of the Seventy" refers to the 70 Jewsih scholars who tranlsated the five books of Moses into Greek.
