Perception
the interpretation of sensory input, individual differences become much more evident.
Sensory Adaptation
unchanging stimulus; the tendency to pay less attention to non changing source of stimulation
Bottom Up Processing
Perception based on building simple input into more complex perceptions.
Top Down Processing
Knowledge we have gained from prior experience with stimuli to perceive them. (A perceptual process in which memory and other cognitive processes are required for interpreting incoming sensory information.)
Absolute Threshold
Smallest possible stimulus that can be detected.
Difference Threshold
Smallest difference between two stimuli that can be detected.
Signal Detection
A two-step process involving:
1) the actual intensity of other stimulus, which will influence the observer's belief that the stimulus did occur
2) the individual observer's criteria for deciding whether the stimulus occurred.
The Amygdala
The ___________ uses visual information to make quick emotional judgement, especially about potentially harmful stimuli.
Opponent Process Theory
A theory of color vision that suggests we have red-green color channel and a blue-yellow color channel in which activation of one color in each pair inhibits the other.
Gestalt Psychology
Read up on Gestalt Psychology on page 198 and 199.

The Gestalt Principle of Proximity and Similarity Model
Retinal Disperity
Allows us to detect objects in stereograms. Infants as young as 4 months can see depth in stereograms, as can monkeys, cats, and falcons.
Audition
Our sense of hearing, not only allows us to identify objects in the distance, but it plays an especially important role in our ability to communicate with others through language.
More on Audition
Infants as young as 2 days show signs of remembering their mothers voice.
Quote by Marcus Aurelius
If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your own estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.
Quote by Albert Einstein
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.
Gate Theory
The theory that suggests that input from touch fibers competes with input from pain receptors, possibly preventing pain messages from reaching the brain.
Understanding of Pain
Research shows the physical contact with loved ones actually reduces the sensation of pain.
