What are the four types of parenting? What were the effects on the adolescents?
Authoritative parent- Encourage adolescent to be independent but still places limits and controls on their actions. The adolescent outcomes are independent, creative, self-assured, and socially skilled.
Authoritarian parents- Restrictive, punitive style in which parent exhorts the adolescent to follow direction and respect work and effort. Outcomes of adolescents dependent, passive, conforming, and usually in collectivist culture.
Neglectful parents or disengaged parents- very uninvolved with their adolescent. Outcomes of adolescent are impulsive, delinquent, and early with sex, and drugs.
Indulgent or permissive parents- parents are highly involved with their adolescents but place few demands or controls on them. Outcomes are irresponsible, conforming and immature.

Stanley Hall (1904) and Anna Freud (1946) claimed that it was universal and inevitable that adolescents rebel against their parents and that last many years. Anna Freud (1946) even asserted that adolescents would not develop normally without this kind of turmoil in their relationships with their parents.

In general, adolescents in stepfamilies have a greater likelihood of a variety of problems compared with their peers in nondivorced families, including depression anxiety, and conduct disorders. The academic achievement of adolescents in stepfamilies tend to be lower. They are also more likely to be involved in delinquent activities.
