Define: Electrolysis
Using electricity to break a molecule down into its constituent elements.
Define: Peer Review
When a scientist performs an experiment that seems to lead to a new, interesting conclusion, other scientists in the field look closely at the experimental procedure and try to find sources of error. Sometimes, they actually perform the experiment again, trying to make sure that the original experimenter didn't cause errors in the experiment. When an experimental result passes peer review, then the experiment is considered trustworthy.
What is: Nuclear Fusion?
A completely clean, efficient, limitless source of energy. There is no harmful waste produced (as there is in nuclear fission), no possibility of meltdown (as there is in nuclear fission), and no worry of running out of the raw materials needed (as there is in nuclear fission).
Until 1989, the only way to get nuclear fusion going was to use expensive, high energy reactors in a very inefficient way (this is typically called hot fusion ). The practical upshot is that right now, nuclear fusion is simply too expensive and inefficient to be used as a power source for today's world.
Explain: Cold Fusion
Dr. Fleischmann and Dr. Pons' announcement that they had achieved cold fusion seemed to change everything. They claimed to have achieved nuclear fusion under very cheap, low-energy conditions. Compared to “hot fusion,” they used so little energy that they called it “cold fusion.” Unfortunately, Drs. Fleischmann and Pons did not submit their experiments to peer review before making their announcement. When other scientists examined the claims, they found them full of experimental errors.
H2O is called a(n).....?
Chemical Formula.
What do chemical bonds do?
Link atoms in a molecule together.
A Polar Molecule...
Is a molecule that has slight positive and negative charges due to an imbalance in the way electrons are shared.
Nonpolar Molecules...
Have no net electrical charge and are not affected by electrical charges.
When you dissolve a substance in a liquid, we say you have made a(n)...
Solution
Define a Solvent:
A liquid substance capable of dissolving other substances.
Define a Solute:
A substance that is dissolved in a solvent. We usually think of solutes as solids, but liquids and gases can be solutes as well.
Water can and cannot dissolve...:
Water can dissolve substances made of polar or ionic molecules, and it cannot dissolve substances made of nonpolar molecules. The reason that water seems to dissolve almost everything is that the vast majority of compounds in Creation are either polar or ionic.
