Thomist and Pragmatist most major point of disagreement?
Thomism - faith and reason allow us to know God and truth

Pragmatism - truth is tentative
-always evolving and changing
-determined by the individual
-no truth is absolute
-truth is whatever works
-moral relativism
Thomism vs Pramatism

Evolution v. Intelligent Design
Thomism - one theory is true the other is not
-faith and reason will show us that God exists and we can discover the truth he has placed in the world
-faith and reason will show intelligent design

Pragmatist - you can believe whatever you want to believe. Truth is determined by the individual and whatever works for them. No truth is absolute.

Value scientific method so would probably steer away from faith in an intelligent designer and favor more so for scientific evidence supporting evolution
Thomism vs. Pragmatism

Singler Gender Education
Thomism - for it; if a child learns best in single gender than do it
-good for developing morality in students

Pragmatism - Whatever works for the individual and larger community. Choose the school that produces best results. Teacher role is to help students solve societal problems and develop learning communities (probably done better in coed schools)
Thomism vs. Pragmatism

State Assessments
Thomism - for it. Need to know truth and reason. Value education. NEed to test for it.

Pragmatism - against it. Truth is relative anyway. Worry about solving societal problems not learning random facts. Better to focus on a few things (hands on!) than a bunch.
Rouseauu quote

Agree or disagree?
Disagree - Rouseauu says that child is naturally good and the school/society corrupts them (pear tree).

School needs to teach children and help them develop values and virtues that will help them later on in life. Elders have had experience. Need to teach children what we've learned so they don't make stupid mistakes. Help develop child into the best individual they can be. They can't do this alone!

Examples:
1) Catholic Schools teach about morality and faith to develop child spiritually
2) Teach students good habits that will help them be successful in life: punctuality, responsibility, leadership skills, money management, time budgeting, etc.
3) Help them develop interpersonal skills in classroom by building community. Help them succeed in work place through these skills. Won't happen if left alone to do their own thing.
Existentialist philosophy in day to day practice of teacher.

3 Teaching and Learning Methods that would be used
Existentialism - 1)stress choice
2) recoginize others personal meaning
3) help students understand responsibility
4)Student makes choices about education

Teacher would simply be there to present decisions for students to make. Would not enforce any kind of belief on them whatsover. Just put material in front of them and let them make a choice. No going above and beyond to help stubborn kid who doesn't do homework. Just sit back and let them make that decision and suffer the consequences. Teacher becomes strictly an agent that hands out consequences to student choices. Has no concern for molding students for success.

3 Teaching and Learning Methods
1) Let student choose what book they want to read or topic they want to do a report on
2) Socratic Questioning - pose a problem to a student and let them choose how to solve it
3) Individual Projects over Group Projects -cater to choices of individual; individual chooses how they will do their project and develop their creative abilities
