What is the Primary and Secondary duty of the Firefighter?
P-Save lives. S-extinguish fires and limit the damage to a/c, shipboard, airfield installed equipment and/or airfield structures.
What are the key components of a fire triangle?
heat, fuel and oxygen. Adding a 4th element makes it a fire tetrahedron.
What actually makes the fire triangle a tetrahedron?
The 4th element called the chemical chain reaction.
What would prevent or extinguish a fire?
The removal of any one of the elements that make up the fire triangle.
How many classes of fires are there?
4
Name the classes of fires?
A, B, C and D class fires.
What is a class A fire?
materials that produce an ash such as wood, cloth and paper.
What are effective extinguishing agents for Class A fires?
water or AFFF(Aqueous Film Foaming Foam).
What are Class B fires?
Occur with flammable liquids such as gas and jet fuel.
How do you put out Class B fires?
AFF, halon 1211, Purple K Powder, and Carbon Dioxide.
What are Class C fires?
Electrical fires that are attacked by using non-conductive agents.
how do you put Class C fires out?
For Energized Class C's- use CO2, Halon, PKP, and H20 in fog patterns with 4 ft minimum distance.
How do you put out de-energized Class C fires?
Treat them as a Class A, B, or D fire.
What is a Class D fire?
Combustible (means it can burn) materials such as magnesium and titanium.
How do you put out a Class Delta fire?
H20 in large quantities in high velocity fog. Apply water from a safe distance as small explosions can occur.
What is AFFF?
Aqueous Film Forming Foam. It consists of noncorrosive materials that have an unlimited shelf life. 3% and 6% are approved for naval use. Ships use 6%.
what is H20 best used for?
Cooling a/c fuselage and provide a heat shield for people. It also cools ordnance, batteries and Class A fires.
What is halon 1211?
A colorless, faintly sweet smelling, electrically nonconductive gas that leaves no residue to clean up. It extinguishes fires by stopping the chain reaction that occurs in the combustion process. It is intended for Class B and C fires however it is effective for Class A.
What is PKP?
Purple K Powder. Intended Primarily for Class B fires. This dry chemical (Potassium bicarbonate) dries and extinguishes the flame. It does not have cooling capabillites so reflash can occur if ignition sources are present.
What are Carbon Dioxide 15lb and 50 lb units used for.
Primarily for Class B and C fires. C02 is a colorless, odorless gas that is one half times heavier than air. It displaces oxygen bringing it to below the level that supports combustion.
