Levodopa
"gold standard" for the treatment of Parkinson's Disease. Reduces symptoms by promoting synthesis of the dopamine in the striatum. 250mg 2-4x/day
Levodopa/Carbidopa (Sinemet)
Decreases side effects associated with Levodopa.
Bromociptine (Parlodel)
dopominergic agonist, relieves symptoms and disability in Parkinson's Disease. Used especially in On-Off syndrome
Neostigmine Bromide (Prostigmin)
Cholinesterase inhibitor. Prevents the acetylcholine inactivation. Anticholinesterase. Increases muscle strength, increases muscle contraction. Myasthenia Gravis. 15-30mg PO 0.5-2.5mg IV
Edrophonium (Tensilon)
Peripheral anticholinesterase, blocks enzyme from breaking down Acetylcholine. Tensilon will diagnose M.G. but is not intended for txt. Differentiate between cholinergic crises and M.G. crises. 2-4mg IV
Tacrine (Cognex)
centrally acting anticholinesterase agent to improve cognitive function. No longer being used.
Donepezil (Aricept)
inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase to improve cognitive function. (for alzheimers) 5-10mg tab/day
