In what kinds of anemia is Iron used to treat?
Well Iron deficiency anemias! Really, though, blood loss anemias (menstruating), anemias caused by prematureity, anemias caused by absorption issues
What are some of the side effects of oral Iron?
Nausea, vomiting, black stool.
What are some of the side effects of IV iron?
Pain, tissue staining, fever, anaphylaxis (generally an option only if pt can't tolerate oral)
What are some signs of B12 deficiency
Atrophic glossitis, chronic gastritis, leucopenia with hypersegmented neutrophils. Common in gastric resection patients
Why must you use B12 in B12 deficient patients and not Folate
Because while it will reverse the anemia it will not help to treat sub acute combined degeneration
Name three causes of folic acid deficiency.
Pregnancy
Alcohol
Chemotheraputic Agents

These cause megaloblastic anemia
What are the indications of erythropoietin (EPO)?
Chronic renal failure
Aplastic anemia
leukemia
HIV/AIDS associated anemia
premature infants
post phlebotomy
What are the side effects of EPO?
Hypertension, DVT, progression of some tumors, anaphylaxis
What are the indications of G-CSF or GM-CSF?
Post chemotherapy
Congenital or cyclic neutropenia
Stem cell harvesting pre high dose chemo
What are the side affects of G-CSF?
bone pain, splenic rupture, anaphylaxis
What are the side effects of GM-CSF?
Fever, Arthralgia, Myalgia, Edema, Pleural Effusion, Anaphylaxis

Overall, G-CSF is preferred because of the severity of the side effects for GM-CSF above.
What is the indication for IL-11 therapy?
Thrombocytopenia post chemptherapy (usually if platelet transfusions are refractory)
What are the side effects of IL-11 threapy?
Fatigue, Headache, Dizziness, Atrial Arrythmia, Hypokalemia
