Disorders Affecting the Muscular System
(As you read, pay attention to the bold words. Click on each word and retype it in the space provided.)
Several brain function or neurological problems manifest themselves through the muscles, taking the form of abnormal muscular movements. For example, a seizure is a sudden attack of a disease, but is commonly thought of in reference to epilepsy. Epilepsy is any of a group of syndromes which are characterized by a disturbance in brain function which results in loss of consciousness, abnormal motor phenomena, or neurosensory disturbances. An episode resulting from an epileptic condition is called a seizure.

The "abnormal motor phenomena" are manifested in the muscular system. A common type of abnormal motor activity is clonic activity. "Clonic" is the adjectival form of clonus: alternate muscular contraction and relaxation in rapid succession. It is a term generally used in conjunction with the term tonic, which means normal tone. So, during a seizure it is often the case that the muscles go through a series of rapid contractions alternating with a return to normal muscle tone. This movement is called tonic/clonic activity or tonicoclonic activity. Although it is not actually caused by an injury to or defect in the muscles themselves, it undoubtedly affects the muscular system.

Another common neurologic disorder which affects the muscular system is Parkinson disease. This is a progressive degenerative nervous system disorder which is characterized by four features: slowness and absence of movement, muscular rigidity, resting tremor, and unstable posture. Rigidity means stiffness or inflexibility. This is the fourth most common disease afflicting the elderly. Again, while the cause of the disorder is neurological, all of the manifestations are musculoskeletal.

Muscle tissue makes up a major part of the human body. Of course, there are many more muscles and disease processes of muscles than are covered in this session. However, we have hit upon the most common terms in this session.
