What are discos?

Discos are where recorded rather than live music is played

Where and to what would people originally dance to and why did they stop?

In jazz clubs to love jazz music. This stopped in WWII when the German banned jazz music because of it's Jewish and black origins. Venue owners turned their clubs into venues with recorded music.

What are DJs?

DJs are people who play music and make announcements.

What happened in the 1960s?

In 1960s Americans were introduced to disco and they became popular and DJs began to use all types of music.

What happened in the 1970s?

In the 1970s music began to be written specifically for the new disco clubs in NY. And one of the 1st disco records was released- Soul Makossa by Manu Dibango (1972)

Who was Tom Moulton?

Tom Moulton was a record producer who extended the length of the disco songs by using remixing and also by looping sections.

New York had special dance schools that...

Taught people how to do popular disco dances.

Describe the dance steps.

•Dancers stay on one spot on the floor


•Arms move more than legs


•Some dances have specific steps and routines (ie the hustle)


•Other dances are individual and improvised. A dancer "freestyles"

What's the standard disco drum rhythm?

The Bass drum plays four-to-the-floor.


The snare drum plays on beats 2 and 4. (Later replaced by hand claps)


The hi-hat plays constant quavers.

What did other instruments do?

The rhythm guitar plays the chords, the lead guitar plays the tune, the bass guitar plays the bass line.


Repeated semi-quaver rhythm in the guitar, it's sound distorted through use of the wah-wah pedal.


An electric piano fills out the harmony, playing repeated chords.


Strings plays long sustained notes.


Brass play "stabs" in the gaps or playing above melody.


The use of synthesised sounds, drum machines and sequencer.

Describe the vocals.

A catchy vocal melody. Reverb is often added to the voice. Use of a "hook", a repeated line or word in the chorus that makes you want to go and buy the single. Use of backing vocals, especially in the chorus. These are often multi-tracked to create harmony.
