Arteriosclerosis

The hardening (and loss of elasticity) of arteries

Atherosclerosis

Buildup of fatty plaque in arteries that leads to narrowing and reduced blood flow

Peripheral vascular disease

A group of diseases in which blood vessles become restricted of blocked, typically due to atherosclerosis

Obesity

BMI 30+



The condition of subcutaneous fat exceeding the amount of lean body fat


Diabetes

Chronic metabolic disorder, caused by insulin deficiency -- which impairs carb usage and enhances usage of fat/protein

Diabetes - Type 1

Diagnosed in children/teens/young adults. Pancreas stops producing insulin, causing blood sugars to rise, resulting in hyperglycemia (dizziness, etc)

Diabetes - Type 2

Directly related to eating. Associated with obesity.

Hypertension

Consistently elevated arterial blood pressure. Likely to induce cardiovascular or end-organ damage

Valsalva maneuver

When a person tries to exhale forcibly with a closed glottis (windpipe) so that no air exits through the mouth/nose. Impedes the return of venuous blood to the heart

Coronary heart disease (CHD)

Leading cause of death and disability for men and women. Caused by atherosclerosis (plaque formation)



Lifestyle choices: cigarette smoking, poor diet, physical inactivity

Osteopenia

Decrease in the calcification or density of the bone, decrease in bone mass

Osteoperosis

Decrease in bone mass and density, and an increase in the space between the bones... resulting in porosity and fragility

Arthritis

Inflammation of the joints

Osteoarthritis

Arthritis where the cartilage becomes soft, frayed, or things out

Rheumatoid arthritis

Arthritis primarily affecting connective tissue. Thickening of articular soft tissue, and extension of synovial tissue over articular cartilage that have become eroded.

Cancer

Malignant neoplasms, which invade surrounding tissues. May metastasize to several sites.

Restrictive lung disease

Fibrous lung tissue, which results in a decreased ability to expand the lungs

Chronic obstructive lung disease

Altered air flow through the lungs, generally caused by airway obstruction as a result of mucus production

Intermittent claudication

The manifestation of the symptoms caused by peripheral arterial disease

Peripheral arterial disease

Narrowing of the major arteries that are responsible for supplying blood to the lower extremities.
