What is Ultraviolet radiation/ Ultraviolet light? |
It is a type of electromagnetic energy. That can be used to disinfect laboratory work surfaces. |
How do Ultraviolet light travel and how are they distinguishable? |
It travels in waves and and is distinguishable from all other waves by it's wavelength. |
What is a wavelength and how is it measured? |
It is the distance between adjacent wave crests and is typically measured in nanometers (nm). |
Ultraviolet light is divided into three groups what are they in order from shortest wavelength to longest? |
1.Ultraviolet C 100-280 wavelength
2. Ultraviolet B 280-315 wavelength
3. Ultraviolet A 315-400 wavelength
Which type of Ultraviolet light is detrimental to bacteria causing irreparable DNA damage and death to bacteria? |
Ultraviolet C the shortest wavelength |
What type of wavelengths in an electromagnetic spectrum are gamma rays? |
The shortest and highest energy wavelengths which start at 10 to the negative five power. |
What are the steps for testing UV exposure on two cultures? |
1. after drawing a line in the middle of two plates and categorizing one side as A and the other B for on the plates. Use an infected cotton swab and streak both plates surface three times rotating it one third turn between streaks. When incubated it will create bacterial lawn. 2. place a paper towel on the table next to the UV lamp and set the covers, open side down, on the disinfectant-soaked towel. Cover the B half of the plates with the card board. 3. Then turn on the lamp for the prescribed time. |
