Biotechnology

Application of biological systems to obtain a product

Recombinant DNA technology

Procedures by which a fragment of DNA of one organism is incorporated into the genome of a different one

Restriction enzyme

DNA cutting enzyme that cut specific fragments of DNA, leaving single stranded sticky ends

DNA gel electrophoresis

Separation of DNA fragments based on their size. DNA fragments are subjected to an electrical current and move toward the positive pole. Smaller fragments move faster.

Nucleic acid hybridization

A fragment of a single stranded nucleic acid can hybridize with another fragment that has a complementary sequence of nucleotides.

DNA sequencing

Process in which exact sequence of nucleotides in a DNA segment is determined.

Polymerase chain reaction

Technique by which small amount of specific DNA fragments can be amplified in vitro

PCR has 3 steps:

Denaturation (separation of DNA strands), priming (primer attaches to strand of DNA), and extension (DNA polymerase extends molecule)

Vector

DNA molecules into which a segment of foreign DNA can be incorporated.

Transgenic organisms

Recombinant plants and animals altered by addition of genes from other organisms.
