Why is it important to control variables in an experiement?
If you do not control variables, then you cannot learn about the effect of the independent variable.
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is the Meteric System and what number is it based on?
a universal measurement system based on the number 10
What units are used to measure mass?
grams
What is the difference between mass and weight?
mass is onstant, weght is not
mass is measured in grams, weight is measured in Newtons;
mass is a measure of matter, weight is a measure of gravity.
What is volume?
the amount of space an object takes up
What units would be used to measure the volume of a liquid?
mL or L
List 6 physical properties of matter.
density, solubility, conductivity, state, malleability, ductility (texture, size, shape, color)
What is density?
The amount of matter in a given volume
What is mass?
the amount of matter in an object
What units would be used to measure the volume of a solid?
cubic centimeters or cubic meters
What is formula for density?
d=m/v
What would the units of density be for a solid?
g/cm3
What would be the units of density for a liquid?
g/mL
List the 3 chemical properties of matter.
reactivity
flammability
combustibility
Why are chemical properties harder to observe than physical properties?
Because if you are observing a chemical property, the substance is already changing
What is the diffenece between a physical change and a chemical change?
Physical change does not change theh identity bt chemical change does
List all the signs of a chemical change.
Bubbles and fizzes
produces heat or light
produces something new
changes color
changes smell
What are the four states of matter?
solid, liquid, gas, plasma
Explain how the particles move in each state of matter.
Solid - vibrate in place
liquids - slide past one another; faster than solid
gases: move rapidly;
plasma: move fastest and are charged
Which state of matter has the particles that move the fastest?
plasma
What state of matter has the greates amount of energy?
plasma
What is the difference between a gas and plasma?
plasma has charged particles and is super heated
List all the changes of state and define them.
melting - solid to liquid
freezing - liquid to solid
evaporation - liquid to gas
condensation - gas to liquid
sublimation - solid to gas
What is an atom?
Building block of all matter.
What charge does each particle have?
Proton - positive charge
Neutron - zero/no charge (neutral)
electrons - negative charge
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance has only one type of atom or only one type of molecule. It cannot be separated physically into a simpler substance.
What 2 types of matter are pure substances?
Elements and compounds are pure substances.
What is an element?
An element is a pure substance with only one type of atom. An element has the same properties throguhtout and cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
How is the periodic table arranged?
The periodic table is arranged by atomic number first.
How is the periodic table arranged?
Ther periodic table is arraqnged by atomic number first
What is a period?
A period is a horizontal row of elements.
What is a group or family?
A group is a vertical column of elements that are closely related to each other. All elements in a group share certain properties.
How do properties change as you move across a period?
Properties change gradually as you move from left to right across a period.
Explain why the elements in a group or family are more closely related than those in a period?
Elements in a group are more closely related b/c they share the same number of electrons in the outer shell and have the same physical and chemical properties.
What is a compound?
A compound is a combination of two or elements that are chemically combined. When combined, the elements from a new substance with new properties or characteristics.
How are compounds formed?
Compounds are formed by elements comgining chemically in a specific ratio.
What happens to the identieis of the elements when a compound is formed?
Elements lose spcific physical and chemical properties when combined in a compound and develop a new substance with new characteristics and properties.
Give three examples of chemical formulas.
H2O, NaCl, CO2
What is a solution?
A solution is a homogeneous mixture that appears to be the same throughout; well-mixed
Whgat is the difference between a solution (homogeneous mixture) and a heterogeneous mixture?
In a heterogeneous mixture - substances are easily identified
In a homogeneous mixture - looks the same, unable to identify parts of the mixture.
In a chemical reaction, what is the reactant?
The reactants are the compounds or elements that you start with (the ingredients) on the left side of the equation.
In a chemical reaction, what is the product?
The product is the result or what is procduced on the right side of the equation.
What does the law of conservation of mass mean?
Mass of products = mass of reatants; matter cannot be created or destroyed, it only changes forms.
