Edema |
Def: is a local or general accumulation of fluid in the interstitial tissue spaces Cause: increased permeability of capillaries, obstruction of lymphatic flow, increased capillary pressure, decrease of plasma protein CI: avoid full-body lymphatic drainage techniques or elevation of limbs above heart level with chronic congestive heart failure, no local or distal techniques with edema from thrombophlebitis or DVT, no lymphatic drainage with untreated or metastasizing neoplasms, avoid hot hydro on already congested tissues, no lymphatic drainage with acute TB and toxoplasmosis, or due to parasites, avoid working distally to any lesion site |
Lymphedema |
The chronic accumulation of interstitial fluid in tissues |
Contusion |
Def: is a crush injury to a muscle Cause: direct blow to a muscle in contact sports, motor vehicle accident, or fall resulting in a fracture or dislocation CI: only pain-free AF ROM in acute stage of mod/severe contusion, no on-site work in the acute stage of a mild contusion, no local or on-site massage in acute and early subacute of mod-severe contusion, avoid removing protective muscle splinting of acute contusions, avoid vigorous massage, heat or contrast hydro, overstretching in the first week-10 days of mod/severe contusions, no distal circulation techniques in acute and early subacute, avoid frictions if client is on anti-inflammatories or blood thinners |
Hematoma |
Is a large area of local hemorrhage following a trauma. |
Myositis Ossificans |
Is an occasional complication following a hematoma, where the blood within the muscle calcifies. |
Strain |
Def: is an overstretch injury to a musculotendinous unit Cause: sudden overstretching of the muscle, an extreme contraction of the muscle against heavy resistance Contributors: inadequate warm-up, limited flexibility, history of previous strains to the muscle CI: only pain-free AF ROM on acute Gr 2 or 3 strains, avoid removing protective muscle splinting of acute strains, no distal circulation techniques in acute and early subacute stages, no hot hydro on Gr 3 strains that have been casted, no friction techniques if client is on anti-inflammatories or blood thinners |
Sprain |
Def: is an overstretch injury to a ligament Cause: trauma-related sudden twist or wrench of the joint beyond its normal ROM Contributors: hypermobility, history of previous sprains, altered biomechanics, CT pathologies CI: only pain-free AF ROM in acute stage, avoid removing protective muscle splinting in acute stage, no distal circulation techniques in acute and early subacute stages, no hot hydro immediately proximal with a Gr 3 sprain that is casted, do not restore full ROM to Gr 3 sprains where ligs have been surgically repaired, do not perform joint play on unstable joints where ligs have been surgically reduced, avoid frictions if client is on anti-inflammatories or blood thinners |
Joint Effusion |
Is the escape of fluid into a body cavity |
Spasm |
Def: is an involuntary, sustained contraction of a muscle Cause: pain, circulatory stasis, increased gamma neuron firing, chilling of the muscle, impaired nutritional supply, lack of Vit D CI: do not eliminate reflex muscle guarding that is protecting an acute injury, avoid passively stretching an acutely spasmodic muscle, no hot hydro on a muscle spasm from an acute injury, do not treat client if DVT or thrombophlebitis is present |
Tendinitis |
Def: inflammation of a tendon Cause: chronic overload of the tendon Contributors: muscle imbalances, poor biomechanics, poor blood supply to tendon, lack of flexibility, chronic degenerative changes, improper equipment CI: no friction techniques if client is on anti-inflammatories |
Paratendinitis |
Inflammation of the paratendon or the tendon sheath. |
Tendinosis |
Describes degenerative changes occurring with chronic overuse tendon injuries. |
Constipation |
Def: is the slow, difficult or infrequent movement of feces through the bowel Cause: lifestyle factors like poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, resisting the urge, stress, postural imbalances; or physiological factors like poor muscle control/tone/coordination, medication side effects, post-surgery side effects, psychological factors, pregnancy, GI conditions CI: do not use heat on abdomen if client has history of high blood pressure or cardiovascular problems, no massage with diarrhea |
Sinusitis |
Def: is an acute or chronic inflammation of the paranasal sinuses Cause: viral infection, bacterial infection, increase in pressure Contributors: deviation of the nasal septum, dairy/wheat products, upper molar abscess CI: no massage if client has fever, no local lymphatic drainage with acute infection |
Trigger Point |
Is a hyperirritable spot, usually within a taut band of muscle. It is tender on site and often exhibits a predictable pain referral pattern. |
Pregnancy |
Is a state of wellness associated with many interrelated changes that occur throughout the woman's body as fetus develops. |
Proteinuria |
Is the presence of high concentrations of protein in the urine |
Cancer |
Def: is a general term used for the abnormal, uncontrolled growth of cells Cause: carcinogens, excesses/deficiencies in diet, heredity CI: no massage local to post-surgical site, don't use irritating products to |
