Seminiferous Tubules
- Function: production of sperm
- 3 cell types
1. Spermatogonia
2. Sertoli Cells
3. Leydig (interstitial) cells
Spermatogonia
- diploid (2N) cells that undergo meiosis to produce haploid sperm (N)
Sertoli cells
- support cells found on the outer portion of tubules
- forms the blood testis barrier
- form zonulae occludens (tight junctions) with adjacent sertoli cells near their base
Leydig (interstital) cells
- found between the tubles
- Function: produce testosterone
Sertoli Cell Function
- separate basal from adluminal compartments
- make special environment
- Blood - testis barrier - keeps sperm antigens out of blood; keeps anit-sperm abs out of testis
- stimulated by FSH to secrete ABP, increase local testosterone concentration
- phagocytize shed cytoplasm from developing sperm
- secrete fluid, nurish cells
