What is aerobic respiration?

The process where an organism releassenergy from food.

What is energy used for?

To power chemical processes in all life forms.

What is the formula for aerobic respiration?

Oxygen + Glucose —> Water + Carvon dioxide (+energy)

What is the name of respiration without oxygen?

Anaerobic respiration

What is anaerobic respiration?

As well as restwithout oxygen, it involves the break down of glucose to create energy.

What is the formula for anaerobic respiration?

Glucose —> Lactic acid (+energy)

What is fermentation?

The yeast being carried out in anaerobic respiration.

What is the equation for fermentation?

Glucose —> Alcohol + Carbon dioxide (+energy)

How can Fermentation be effected?

By temperature

What are the lungs?

The organ used for breathing and gas exchange.

How does oxygen get to the lungs?

It diffuses into the blood through the alveoli to the lungs.

How does carbon dioxide escape from our body?

It is breathed out after the carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli.

What happens when we breathe in air?

The chest inflates

The ribs move up and out

The diagphram moves down

The air pressure in the lungs decreases

Air is forced inside the lungs

What happens when we breathe out?

The chest deflates

The ribs move down and in

The diagphram moves up

The pressure in the lungs increases

The air in the lungs is forced out

Why is gas exchange effective in the lungs?

The alveoli has a large surface area, it is mpist and thin and has a good blood supply.

What affects our breathing?

Exercise, asthma and smoking

How do plants obtain their gases?

Through the stomata in the leaf for photosynthesis and respiration.

What is the stomata?

The holes beneath the leaf that are opened and closed by guard cells to allow carbon dioxide, oxygen and water vapour to enter and exit the leaf.
