Why is the knee joint considered susceptible to traumatic injury? |
-2 long levers that rely on ligaments and muscles (to provide stability not the congruency of the joint) |
What are the 3 joints of the knee? |
-tibiofemoral joint -patellofemoral joint -superior tibiofibular joint |
What is important about the menisci? |
2 on each knee -medial and lateral -The knee menisci are fibrocartilaginous structures that sit within the knee joint, deepening the tibiofemoral articulation. They function to improve stability, shock absorption and load transmission of the knee. |
What is unique about the medial meniscus? |
C-shape or semilunar larger more open and wider; semi-circular in shape |
What is unique about the lateral meniscus? |
semicircular-like an incomplete circle, i.e. anterior and posterior tibial roots are very close to each other smaller than medial |
What is the resting position of the knee? |
20-30 deg flexion |
What is the closed packed postion of the knee? |
extension and external rotation (screw home mechanism) |
What is the capsular pattern of the knee? |
flexion would be more limited than extension |
What is the knee complex? |
all 3 joints of the knee |
What is the knee joint? |
tibiofemoral joint |
Which side of the knee has more movement because of it's menisci? |
the medial side has more (larger) |
What side of the knee do most injuries happen? |
medial side |
Explain the vascularity of the menisci: |
Avascular inner 2/3 Vascular outer 1/3 red zone (does not heal well) |
What are the functions of the menisci? |
-Joint congruency -shock absorption/weight distribution -lubrication -nutrition -directs femoral condyles |
