Characteristics

- Eukaryotic

-Unicellular or simple multicellular

- Heterotrophic/ Autotrophic

- Motile - move through pseudopods (fake feet)

e.g. Amoeba, seaweeds

Amoeba

Unicellular, Heterotrophic + lives in fresh water

Structure of Amoeba

Food Vacuole

Food ingested by phagocytosis is digested. Ingestible materials are egested in outer membrane.

Pseudopods

Allow amoeba to move and engulf food

Cytoplasm

ECTOplasm: outer layer that slows down osmosis + provides shape

ENDOplasm: inner layer flows allow for movement

Contractile Vacuole

- Regulates amount of water in amoeba (osmoregulation: the balance of water + salt levels in an organisms)

- If excess water enters the cell by osmosis the contractile vacuole grows, moves towards the surface + releases excess water
