Power
Ability to control/influence/exert will on others for own interest.

Ex: Japan has no hard power but lots of soft power
Balance of Power
Power distributed so no threat of imminent war, with goal of peaceful co-existence.
Bipolarity vs. Multi
More peaceful, safe, balanced than multipolarity.
Hegemony
No balance of power needed because one group has it all.
Sovereignty
State has ultimate power over itself. "Buck stops here"

Control over economy, military, etc.

Europeans intent on cooperative institution-building, but Asia having none of that.
Sources of Diversity
Not a geographical "unit" like NAFTA because countries separated by thousands of miles of territories and oceans.

Thais and Japs not colonized, but JP colonized much of north Asia and Korea and that's why China doesn't like them.
