What is the significance of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to the fire service?
The DHS was created to prepare, defend, and respond to terrorist acts within the United States and is tasked with the development of a National Response Plan (NRP) and to administer the National Incident Management System (NIMS). Federal grant money to fire departments is tied to their compliance with NIMS. Currently, the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) and the United States Fire Administration (USFA) fall under the DHS.
