What is the definition of a mixture? |
two or more substances that are mixed together, and NOT chemically combined. |
What is the definition of a solution? |
A mixture created when a solute is dissolved in a solvent. (when a something is dissolved into a liquid. example- sugar dissolved in water) |
What is a solute? |
A substance you dissolve in the solvent. OR What is being dissolved in a liquid...ex) sugar |
What is a solvent? |
The liquid in which the solute (something) is dissolved. ex) water |
What is the universal solvent? |
Water |
What is the definition of an aqueous solution? |
It is a solution where the liquid is WATER. |
What is the formula for a solution? |
Solution= SOLVENT + SOLUTE |
What does soluble mean? |
That it can dissolve (in a solvent/liquid) |
What does insoluble mean? |
It can't be dissolved (in a solvent/liquid). |
Do different substances have different solubility? |
No |
What does solubility mean? |
How fast something dissolves (in a solvent) |
Are all sodium compounds soluble? |
yes |
What are three salts that always are soluble? |
Sodium, Potassium and Ammonium |
How can you increase solubility? |
1-stirring it |
What is the meaning of a saturated solution? |
It means that no more of the thing (solute) can be dissolved at that temperature- it has reached it's maximum. |
What does volatile mean? |
Something that evaporates easily |
Do volatile liquids have low boiling points? |
Yes! because the forces between the particles are weak. |
Give three examples of solvents? |
1-Water 3-Propanone/acetone (dissolves nail polish) |
Do most solids become soluble as the temperature is increased? |
yes |
