Atrophy
What is it and 5 ways it happens?
Decrease in cell size due to:
Disuse, Denervation (neuron removed-such as carpal tunnel/paralysis), Loss of stimulation(menopause), Malnutrition, Ischemi
Hypertrophy
Increase in cell size. M. unable to adapt w/ mitotic division.

May be physiologic, pathologic, or compensates, or serves as compensation .
Hyperplasia
Increase in number of cells. Tissues must be able to go through mitosis (epithelial).

Hormonal and compensates, or serves as compensation

Example: Remove ovary - other will take roll of both
Metaplasia
Replacement of adult cells & not a normal physiologic process and may be the first step toward neoplasia.

Example: GERD/Smoking
Dysplasia
an abnormal proliferation of cells that is characterized by changes in cell size, shape, and loss of cellular organization.

Can be reversed.
