Atrophy
What is it and 5 ways it happens? |
Decrease in cell size due to:
Disuse, Denervation (neuron removed-such as carpal tunnel/paralysis), Loss of stimulation(menopause), Malnutrition, Ischemi |
Hypertrophy
Increase in cell size. M. unable to adapt w/ mitotic division.
May be physiologic, pathologic, or compensates, or serves as compensation . |
Hyperplasia
Increase in number of cells. Tissues must be able to go through mitosis (epithelial).
Hormonal and compensates, or serves as compensation Example: Remove ovary - other will take roll of both |
Metaplasia
Replacement of adult cells & not a normal physiologic process and may be the first step toward neoplasia.
Example: GERD/Smoking |
Dysplasia
an abnormal proliferation of cells that is characterized by changes in cell size, shape, and loss of cellular organization.
Can be reversed. |
