What happens to an oocyte after it's been released by the ovary?
It is drawn into the uterine tube and fertilized (or not)
What happens to the egg after it's been drawn into the uterine tube?
The fertilized (or not) egg travels down the uterine tube and implants into the endometrium of the uterus
What is the endometrium of the uterus?
It is the site of implantation of the egg
What are the three phases of the uterine cycle? (title and duration)
1. Menstrual phase (Days 1-5)
2. Proliferative phase (Days 6-14)
3. Secretory phase (Days 15-28)
What occurs during the menstrual phase?
The endometrium is shed. The capillaries break down and bleeding occurs.
What happens during the same time as the menstrual phase?
The ovary begins a new follicular phase
What happens during the proliferative phase?
The endometrium proliferates, that is, the capillaries begin to regrow
What happens in the ovaries during the proliferative phase?
Ovary continues follicular phase and the follicles secrete estrogen to stimulate the proliferation of the endometrium
What triggers the switch from proliferative phase to the secretory phase?
Ovulation
What occurs during the secretory phase?
Glands in the endometrium secrete nutrients called uterine milk to nourish fertilized egg as it implants
What is occurring in the ovaries during the secretory phase?
The ovary enters the luteal phase and the progesterone from the corpus luteum stimulates secretion of the endometrium
What occurs at the end of the uterine cycle?
There is a drop in hormone levels which triggers endometrium to be shed. This starts the menstrual cycle again
What occurs at the end of the ovarian cycle?
If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum dies and estrogen and progesterone levels drop.
What kind of feedback triggers ovulation in the ovarian cycle?
Positive feedback
