What is the difference between a sex chromosome & an autosome?

-sex chromosomes: chromosomes that determine an individuals gender.(23 pair in karyotype)

(also XX - female [larger] XY - male [smaller])

-autosomes: chromosomes are the same in both genders (on karyotype pairs 1-22 in humans)

What is a karyotype? Can you distinguish the gender of the individual using a karyotype? How?

a picture of chromosomes displayed in pairs. You can distinguish the gender by the 23rd set of chromosomes.

2 large = XX 1 large, 1 small = XY

What is incomplete dominance? Give an example.

When 2 dominant alleles blend to make a 3rd phenotype.

EX: Red = RR White = WW Pink = PW

What is co-dominance? Give an example.

When both phenotypes show together.

EX: Black = BB White = WW Spotted = BW

We actually look at the organism's ____________ to determine their ____________.

phenotype, genotype

What is a carrier? What is their genotype?

someone who carries the recessive allele

EX: Bb

If someone is a carrier in a pedigree, the trait must be ___________.

recessive

If you have a male carrier, then what it eh inheritance pattern (AD, AR, XD, XR)?

Autosomal Recessive

What are the most common pedigree symbols:

-male & female

-affected male & female

-male carrier & female carrier

-M: [], colored in, and dotted.

-F: O, colored in, and dotted

If the pedigree skips a generation then it is most likely __________.

recessive
