Functions of the nervous system
1. sensory input
2. Integration (information processing)
3. Motor output (involuntary or voluntary)
Structural Classification of the Nervous System
1. Central Nervous System (CNS): Brain and Spinal Cord
2. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): Peripheral nerves, Ganglia, Sensory receptors
Sensory division or Afferent Division
Sensory neurons carry information to the CNS from:
1. Special Sensory Receptors (in sensory organs like the photoreceptor in the eye)
2. Somatic Sensory receptors:
a. exteroceptors(in the skin: Thermoreceptors for temperature, nociceptors for pain, and pacinian corpuscles for pressure.
b. Proprioceptors( in muscles, joints and tendons for position and movement)
3.Visceral sensory receptors: Interoceptors in organs such as heart or on smooth muscle of organs like the lungs or intestines.
Motor Division or Efferent Division
Motor (efferent) neurons carry commands from the CNS to:
A: Somatic motor effectors: Skeletal muscles (commands are voluntary)
B: Visceral motor effectors (smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and glands). Commands are involuntary or autonomic (sympathetic or parasympathetic
